Located in Sinimäe at the so-called New Cemetery, the Vaivara War of Independence Memorial commemorates local residents who fell in the Estonian War of Independence (1918–1920). The monument was unveiled in 1924, destroyed in 1940, and restored in 1991. Today it is protected as a national cultural heritage site.

The memorial was designed by the renowned Estonian sculptor Voldemar Mellik. Made of Saaremaa dolomite, the monument is crowned with a powerful sculptural group depicting a father holding his dying son — a symbol of loss and the human cost of freedom. The base bears plaques with the names of 25 fallen residents of Vaivara.
In 2023, the monument underwent conservation work supported by the National Heritage Board. It remains an important site of remembrance and part of the region’s historical landscape.
