Friedebert Tuglas Memorial Stone
At the end of Vaikse Street in Narva-Jõesuu stands a memorial stone dedicated to the Estonian national writer Friedebert Tuglas. The stone marks the spot where the author spent time resting in the summer of 1937 and reflected on ideas for his well-known work “Little Illimar.”

The memorial stone was unveiled in 1991 during the World Vironians’ Days held in Narva-Jõesuu. It commemorates Tuglas’s connection with the seaside resort, which in the first half of the 20th century was a popular holiday destination for many cultural and literary figures.
According to the writer’s biographical notes, Tuglas travelled to Narva-Jõesuu with his family by car in July 1937. During that summer he developed ideas for “Little Illimar,” which later became one of the best-known works of Estonian literature. Today the memorial stone forms part of Narva-Jõesuu’s cultural heritage sites.
