Where the Sea Feels Closer

For many seasons now, a surf club has been operating on the summer beach of Narva-Jõesuu, becoming a meeting point for everyone who loves active time on the water. Here you can try SUP surfing, kayaking, discover new water sports, spend the day with friends, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the sea and freedom.

The project grew out of a personal passion and today is rightfully considered one of the pioneers of water-based active recreation in the Ida-Viru region. We spoke with the founder and owner of the club, Anton Pratkunas, about how it all began and what the surf club is like today.

How did the idea of starting a surf club in Narva-Jõesuu come about, and why here?

The idea to open a surf club came to us in autumn 2017. In the summer of the same year, we bought our first five new SUP boards and gave visitors in Narva-Jõesuu the chance to try them. For most people, it was their first experience, as this activity was only beginning to develop in our region. We felt that people were interested in it, and just as importantly, we were interested in it ourselves. That’s when we decided we wanted to create the first surf club in Ida-Viru County — right here in our hometown Narva-Jõesuu and on our favourite beach.

What did you want to offer people with this project — activity, time on the water, new experiences, or all of it together?

Most likely all of it together! Everything our club has done and continues to do comes from genuine interest and passion on our part. Of course, we also want as many people as possible to share this hobby with us.
We tried to involve people in different activities: running, organising sports events, volunteering, swimming, and surfing. We have always been drawn to summer and water sports, which is why we started offering formats that are relatively easy for anyone to try — SUP surfing and kayaking.

How many years have you been operating? What moments have stood out the most during this time?

The surf club opened in the summer of 2018, and since then we have been operating every summer at our traditional location — between the Albatross café and Meresuu hotel.

The most memorable moments are always the beautiful sunny days, because there are not that many of them in Estonia. On such days we are especially happy to welcome all our guests. For a perfect SUP day, three conditions are important: sunshine, warm water, and no wind. When all of these come together, many people visit us — but unfortunately, such days are quite rare.

What services and formats are currently available: SUP boards, kayaks, trips, beginner training?

We have two locations in Narva-Jõesuu. The first is the beach surf club, where you can try SUP surfing and learn WINGfoil and skimboarding. Kitesurfing may be added in the future. You can ride independently, come with a group of friends, or celebrate a birthday or other event with us. We also offer lessons for beginners and organise children’s camps.

The second location is at Narva-Jõesuu Yacht Club, where we organise kayak trips along the river — a format that is also very popular.

Who is this type of recreation best suited for, and what would you recommend to those who want to try it for the first time?

SUP surfing is simple and suitable for people of different ages and body types. The main thing is to be able to keep your balance at least a little — and enjoyment is guaranteed. We are always happy to welcome both old and new friends. You can come to ride, socialise, listen to music, and simply have a great time by the sea.
SUP surfing (Stand Up Paddleboarding) – riding a stable board with a paddle. Suitable for almost everyone, easy to learn, and perfect for calm water and relaxed rides.

WINGfoil – riding a board with an underwater foil and an inflatable hand-held wing. As the board gains speed, it lifts above the water, creating a feeling of “flying” over the surface.

Skimboarding – riding a small flat board over a thin layer of water near the shore. The rider runs, throws the board onto wet sand, and glides across the water, performing turns and tricks.

Kitesurfing – riding a board while controlling a large kite. The wind provides power, allowing riders to gain speed, jump, and perform tricks.
